  Glass.  Lots of Glass...
Panels, Fused and Jewelry

How it all began...

In 1999, I made a stained-glass panel and incorporated 3-d flowers that I had "slumped" into the panel.   I needed some help with stabilizing the frame, so I called my dad.  After we got it framed, I asked him to hold the stained glass piece in front of the window.  It was beautiful!  My dad said, "Marlene, you are an artist."

Thanks, Dad, for encouraging me.

I was inspired to make fused glass jewelry after I had made fused glass tiles for bathroom and kitchen remodels.  I have fused different "elements" sandwiched between pieces of glass.  I have fused copper, brass, leaves, glass beads, glass paints, inks and a host of other items.

Every firing offers a surprise.  I have learned in glass fusing that the "glass rules".  When fusing glass, you are taking the glass back into a "liquid-like" form.  When firing pieces of glass and other components with the glass, you have to be certain that the glasses and components have the same co-efficiency, and that they are compatible.  If not, the glass will shatter or crack from stress.  (Sounds like a bad marriage, huh?)

I have never taken a stained glass class nor any class to learn this unique art.  I have taken determination, mixed it with humor and a little creativity, and the rest is history!  I do enjoy every moment that I spend in my studio.

Finally, I am eager to share any of my ideas, experiments, blunders and successes.  Fused glass jewelry is fun to make!

Thanks for dropping in, and stop by often.  I will be adding many more pieces.

Let's begin with some of my 3-d glass panels.  Here we go!

Above:  This was my first panel, a labor of love.  I struggled with this for weeks.  I made it on the kitchen table with a piece of plywood underneath.  24" x 36"  hmmmm...guess I could have started with something a little smaller.  Even though I know that there are several "mistakes" in this piece, it remains one of my favorites.

Above:  At this point, I was on a roll.  Yes, that is a vase that I "slumped" in the kiln.
Approximately 11" x 22"

Above:  This is a rose that I made for a dear friend after his mom passed away.  Notice that the lead stem begins on the backside of the cross.  I made it to symbolize my dad's favorite poem...

"The Rose Still Grows"

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God's free light,
Watered and fed by the morning dew,
Shedding it's sweetness day and night.

As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall
Through which there shone a beam of light.

Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice's length
And unfolded itself on the other side.

The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before,
And it lost itself in beauties new,
Breathing it's fragrance more and more.

Shall claim of death cause us to grieve
And make our courage faint and fall?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive--
The rose still grows beyond the wall,

Scattering fragrance far and wide
Just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forever-more.
